    Orkes Komunitas Concordia.

A community orchestra for classical music lovers in Jakarta, where players rehearse, perform and grow together.

Led by Music Director and Principal Conductor Deza A. Zakiy, Concordia brings big orchestral works to Jakarta audiences, from Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony to Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights, alongside Indonesian favourites like Ismail Marzuki's Rayuan Pulau Kelapa.

Concordia is part of the gripastudio family: Deza's debut conducting recital, The First Downbeat, was performed with Concordia's strings and harp in gripastudio's StudioOne.

    Meet the conductor

Deza A. Zakiy is Concordia's Music Director and Principal Conductor. We sat down with him for gripastudio's Whispers artist highlight. Here's the short version.

    How music feels

Playing brings him closer to the people he plays with. Conducting, he says, is like telling a story in a language that carries emotion in its purest form, one anyone can understand, whatever their background.

    How it started

He began in quartets and small ensembles of four to eight players. Nobody was leading the rehearsals, so he went looking for how to lead one, and found conducting.

    His favourite piece

Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. You don't need to have read Shakespeare: the music tells the whole story, scene by scene, with real depth of feeling.

“Conductors shouldn't only give direction. We have to listen a lot more.”

The best advice he's been given

A conductor can get so focused on the music that they forget the musicians. For Deza, the relationships inside an orchestra matter even more than the music itself.
