Sea to Shore (Dari Laut ke Darat)

Behind every green mussel harvested from the waters of Cilincing lies a story of hardworking hands, tireless effort, and families whose hopes depend on the sea. From sea to shore, an intricate chain of livelihoods continues to unfold, day after day.

Along the Cilincing shoreline, green mussels sustain a livelihood built between water and land.

Before the city wakes, Cilincing is already working.

Beyond the shoreline, among rows of floating containers, a man surfaces from the grey water. In his hands is a cluster of green mussels—small, dark shells that will pass through many more hands before the day is over.

The day’s harvest begins in the water.

    03 / 10

A net of mussels is emptied straight into the hold of a wooden boat.

Basket after basket is emptied onto wooden boats until the day’s harvest becomes a glistening mound. The boats make their way back to shore, carrying the beginning of a livelihood.

On land, a different rhythm of work awaits.

The mussels are sorted, cleared of mud and debris brought in from the sea, then thoroughly washed. Thousands of shells pass through experienced hands, each movement practiced and familiar, preparing the harvest for the next stage of its journey.

Water is poured over the harvest, washing the shells before the boat turns toward shore.

On shore, water gives way to fire.

    Then comes the fire.

Large pots sit above open flames. The mussels are boiled for hours as smoke and steam fill the workspace. Orange fire cuts through the darkness. Workers move between the heat carrying heavy baskets, their clothes damp, their movements practiced.

It is perhaps the most dramatic part of the process, but here it is simply another day’s work.ace.

    Kemudian, tibalah giliran api.

Tungku-tungku besar menyala.

Baskets heavy with cooked mussels are carried through the smoke on a bamboo pole.

Still steaming, the cooked mussels are tipped out where the shellers wait.

Only after hours of boiling are the shells ready to be opened.

The scale of the harvest suddenly becomes intimate again. A mountain of mussels returns to one shell at a time. Experienced fingers pry them apart, separating the meat with small, precise movements repeated hundreds—perhaps thousands—of times.

Nearby, a cat wanders through the day’s catch. Someone watches. Someone waits. Life continues around the work.

Experienced hands separate shell from meat, while a cat inspects the day’s catch.

    Life continues around the work.

From beneath the water to the boat, from washing to fire, from shell to hand, each stage belongs to someone. Diver, boatman, washer, boiler, sheller, trader—one harvest quietly connects many livelihoods.

Penyelam, awak perahu, pemilah, perebus, pengupas, hingga pedagang.

Empty shells pile up beside the bamboo—what is left once the meat has gone to market.

And between all that movement, there are moments of stillness.

A worker rests inside a brightly painted boat. The water around him is calm. For a moment, the chain stops.

    10 / 10

For a moment, the boat is still. Tomorrow, the chain begins again…

Tomorrow, the boats will return to the mussel beds. The baskets will fill. The fires will burn again.

In Cilincing, the sea does not simply provide a harvest. It sets an entire chain of lives in motion.

Laut menggerakkan sebuah mata rantai kehidupan.
